Authorities in the Maldives have arrested two foreigners who were caught attempting to smuggle narcotics into the country.

They said that the couple was arrested with 18 kgs of drugs and that the man and woman from Brazil were arrested last Tuesday from Velaana International Airport.

Officials identified them as 28-year-old Cristiano Silva and 37-year-old Nairu Nuenez Desouza.

Reports have confirmed that the Criminal Court had yesterday remanded them custody for more days. It said that while Nairu was remanded in custody for 7 days, Cristiano was remanded in custody for 15 days.

Authorities said that they were remanded in custody because they pose a threat to the community.

Few foreigners from Brazil have been arrested before for attempting to smuggle narcotics into the country.

In August, a 31-year-old woman was arrested for attempting to smuggle 3 kg of cocaine into the Maldives while a 29-year-old Brazilian was arrested for attempting to smuggle 16 kg of drugs.
