The Maldives Meteorological Services Met Office has issued a yellow alert for most of the country today.

It said via Twitter that the alert has been issued from Kaafu Atoll to Laamu Atoll and that it would be from 08:45 am to 12:00 pm.

It also said that torrential rain and thunderstorms are expected in these areas during the alert hours.

Two days back, the Met Office had said that the weather in the country is expected to worsen for the next three days.

It said that under the influence of the Low-Pressure Area over Sri Lanka, deep convective clouds are expected to form over the Maldives in the next 3 days.

Met Office cautioned all, especially seafarers to take precautionary measures.

This comes after the Transport Authority had revised the Vessel Safety Guidelines earlier this week. It said that once a yellow alert or a higher alert is issued, vessels smaller than 9 meters are banned from making trips.

It also said that if the guidelines are not implemented, the vessel's operator would be given a fine of MVR 15,000 once the issue has been licensed and that measures would be taken against the vessel's captain as well.
