Health Protection Agency HPA says a local woman has died from COVID-19 in the country today.

HPA said via Twitter that earlier this morning at 03:15 am, a 44-year-old local woman admitted at the Hulhumale Medical Facility HMF has succumbed to COVID-19.

The Agency confirmed that this is the 240th COVID-19 death in the Maldives since April 2020.

The pandemic has claimed 9 lives here in the Maldives so far this month and all the individuals who had died from the illness are locals.

Most of those who have died in the pandemic are elderly locals with underlying health conditions but few younger individuals have also been killed in the global pandemic.

Meanwhile, the HPA confirmed 95 new cases of COVID-19 in the Maldives on Wednesday.

It said that this includes 55 new cases from inhabited islands, 38 new cases from the Greater Male' Area, and 2 cases from operational resorts.

The new cases take the total COVID cases reported in the island nation to 86,419.

HPA had said that there are currently 1,311 active cases of COVID-19 in the Maldives and that 15 COVID patients remained hospitalized for further treatment.

HPA added that 84,856 people have recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic.
