Health Protection Agency HPA has confirmed another 80 new cases of COVID-19 in the country taking the total number of cases reported in the Maldives beyond 85,200.

HPA said that 55 of the new cases were reported from the inhabited islands across the country while 20 cases were confirmed from the Greater Male' Area.

HPA reported another 5 cases from operational resorts in the Maldives.

Wednesday's new cases take the total number of COVID cases reported in the Maldives to a staggering 85,287 since March 2020.

The Agency had said yesterday that there were 1,333 active cases of the pandemic here in the country and that 83,700 people have since recovered from the illness.

HPA added 17 COVID patients are currently hospitalized for further treatment.

The COVID-19 global pandemic has killed 232 individuals in the Maldives with mostly elderly locals with underlying health conditions succumbing to the fast-spreading illness.

HPA had also said that the total number of cases includes 13 deceased positives whose cause of death is not directly related to COVID.
