Maldives Democratic Party MPD's May 6th Committee says the Education Ministry is looking to hire foreigners to teach Islam as a subject at local schools in a bid to deter students from extremist ideologies.
Speaking at the party's General Meeting held last night, Chairperson of the Committee Hassan Afeef said that members of the committee had met Education Minister Dr. Aishath Ali last Thursday.
He said that during this meeting discussions were held on how extremist ideologies were spread among the student population in the Maldives.
Afeef quoted the Minister and said that such ideologies are more spread among students studying in different schools in the Atolls and that the Education Ministry is holding programs targeting such students.
He also said that the Ministry is working to hire a number of foreigners to teach Islam as a subject in the Maldives to deter students from such a path.
Afeef also said that the Ministry is working to amend the current curriculum for Islam and root out content that incites hatred and violence.
