Island Council of Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo has imposed a 24-hour curfew on the island amid a rampant outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The council said in an announcement the spread of the pandemic has now evolved into a community spread as authorities had been unable to control the disease in the southern island.

It said that the council had initially imposed a 24-hour curfew on the island for 14 days but have now added a further 7 days to further curb the illness.

Measures to be implemented in Thinadhoo

  • Cancellation of household permits issued to each resident for one week
  • Eases given for those who exercise have been revoked
  • Using the minimum number of employees to offer essential services at government offices as per Health Protection Agency guidelines
  • Ban on private vehicles
  • Taxi services can only be used by those issued time-bound permits by police. Taxis that give service to such individuals must be kept away from giving services for a period of one week
  • Shops and businesses must only operate via deliveries and must no allow customers inside the shops
  • Dine-in at restaurants and cafes must be stopped and such establishments must only offer delivery services between 08:00 am and 10:00 pm
  • Members of fishing vessels cannot disembark onto the island after fishing trips
  • All businesses that have not been given a government-issued permit must cease operations for one week

Thinadhoo council urged the island's residents to give their cooperation to the local authorities to fight off the current situation on the island
