Health Protection Agency HPA says the total number of COVID-19 cases reported in the Maldives has now risen past 74,000.

HPA said yesterday that 143 new cases were reported in the country on Friday and that 104 of those cases were confirmed from the inhabited islands.

HPA also confirmed 8 new cases from operational resorts and 5 from islands under development.

The Agency added that on Friday 26 new cases were confirmed from the Greater Male' Area where the number of cases had been in the 1000s earlier last month.

Friday's cases take the total number of COVID-19 cases reported in the island nation to a staggering 74,074. HPA said yesterday that 165 people had recovered from the illness in the Maldives on Friday and that a total of 70,490 people have now recovered from the illness in the country since March 2020.

The Agency confirmed that 3,359 remained as active cases of the pandemic in the Maldives and that 23 COVID-19 patients are currently hospitalized for further treatment.

HPA said that 213 people have succumbed to illness in the Maldives since April 2020 with 88 deaths reported in the month of May and another 50 deaths confirmed last month.
