A young mother has succumbed to COVID-19 shortly after giving birth to a baby via C-Section.

She has been identified as 25-year-old Samiya Ahmed from the island of Faafu Atoll Nilandhoo.

Speaking to "The Press", President of the Nilandhoo council Ali Ahmed said that Samiya, who was nearing the end of her pregnancy, had been transferred to Male' last month after her condition worsened having contracted COVID-19.

He confirmed that Samiya was taken to Male' on May, 28 and that she had delivered the baby via C-Section on May, 29 after her condition continued to deteriorate.

Ali Ahmed said that her baby is healthy despite the emergency C-Section at 8 months.

But unfortunately, Samiya's condition remained the same and she was transferred to Dharumavantha Hospital for further treatment.

The young mother had succumbed to COVID-19 earlier this afternoon. But Health Protection Agency HPA is yet to confirm her death as a pandemic death.

If confirmed she would be the youngest adult to pass away due to the pandemic in the Maldives.

Earlier this month, a 10-year-old girl had died because of COVID-19.
