Maldives Correctional Services has confirmed that it is now conducting a special operation in two jails under its authority in relation to the failed assassination attempt against the Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed last month.
It said that the operation was underway in Male' Jail and Maafushi Jail in Maafushi Island of Kaafu Atoll.
It also said that the operation was being carried in cooperation with both Police and the Maldives National Defense Force.
Maldives Correctional Services said that the purpose of the operation is to chase leads about the attack against the Speaker last month as well as to root out extremist ideologies from the jails.
It did not give any more information about the operation underway in the early hours of this morning.
Former President Nasheed was targeted last month after an IED strapped to a motorcycle was detonated just outside his residence in Male' as he stepped out of his house for an evening engagement.
The Speaker had suffered near-fatal injuries to several parts of his body and was flown to Germany where he is still recuperating from his injuries.
Police had arrested four individuals directly involved in the attack against Nasheed and this includes the suspect who had allegedly detonated the IED as the Speaker neared the parked vehicle.
Police had also arrested a total of 14 individuals in relation to the case and say that they are trying to establish the motive for the attack with extremist ideologies leading the list of motives.
