Health Protection Agency HPA has confirmed an additional 1,603 new cases of COVID-19 in the country on Friday.
HPA reported that out of the 1,603 cases, 1,025 cases were confirmed from the Greater Male' Area and that 571 new cases were reported from inhabited islands.
HPA confirmed another 7 new cases from operational resorts.
This takes the total number of cases reported in the country since March 2020, to a staggering 52,405. HPA had confirmed more than 21,000 new cases in this month alone as the country battles its worst COVID-19 wave since the pandemic reached its shores last year.
The Agency had also confirmed that although 31,197 people have recovered from the illness, there are currently 21,079 active cases of the illness in the country. HPA said that 286 COVID-19 patients are currently hospitalized for further treatment.
The pandemic has killed 120 individuals in the Maldives and the death toll had risen rather dramatically this month with 47 COVID-19 deaths reported in May alone.
Yesterday, HPA had confirmed another 5 COVID-19 deaths and all five had come from Hulhumale Medical facility, a facility designated to solely treat COVID-19 patients.
