Health Protection Agency HPA has confirmed that are now more than 10,000 active cases of COVID-19 in the country right now with the sudden surge of new cases in the last few days.

HPA reported 1,204 new cases across the country yesterday and said that 729 cases are positive cases from samples collected between 6 pm of 9th May and 6 pm of 10th May.

The Agency also said that new cases include 961 from the Greater Male' Area, 235 from inhabited islands, and 8 new cases from operational resorts.

This is the second day straight that HPA had reported more than 1000 daily cases in the Maldives.

This has taken the total number of cases reported in the country to 37,019 with 10,376 active cases across the country.

HPA also said that 244 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized for further treatment.

While 26,547 people have recovered from the illness, the pandemic has killed 87 people in the country since April 2020. This includes 3 individuals who succumbed to the disease yesterday.

Authorities in the Maldives have tightened their measures against the pandemic in the past few weeks including imposing a curfew in the Greater Male' Area and five other islands in the Atolls.

But rising cases have prompted authorities to consider even harsher measures including going under a full lockdown.
