Health Protection Agency HPA has confirmed a COVID-19 death in the Maldives today.

HPA said via Twitter that today at 11:12 am, an 82-year-old local woman admitted at Dharumavantha Hospital 11th floor, DH11 has passed away.

HPA confirmed that this is the 68th COVID-19 death in the Maldives since April of last year.

The 68 people who have succumbed to the global pandemic include 61 locals and 7 foreigners.

Most of the locals who had died are elderly individuals with underlying health conditions but some younger locals have also succumbed to the illness in the past year.

HPA had also said that the total number of cases reported in the country includes 9 deceased positives whose cause of death is not directly due to COVID-19.

Last night, the Agency had reported another 95 new cases of the pandemic in the Maldives including 59 from the Greater Male' Area and 22 from inhabited islands.

This has taken the total number of COVID-19 cases reported on the island nation to 25,939 with 23,242 recoveries.

HPA had said currently there are 2,621 active cases of COVID-19 in the country and that 58 COVID patients are hospitalized for further treatment.
