Health Protection Agency HPA has confirmed 147 new cases of COVID-19 in the Maldives today and reported the most cases from the atolls.

In its daily COVID-19 update via Twitter, HPA reported that 69 COVID-19 cases were reported from the Atolls while it confirmed 65 COVID cases from the Greater Male' Area.

This comes amid growing concern that the outbreak in the Atolls could lead to further restrictive measures in the islands as more than 10 islands remain under monitoring following suspected cases of community spread.

HPA also said today that 10 COVID-19 cases were confirmed from operational resorts and that 2 cases were reported from industrial islands and 1 from an island under development.

The new cases take the total number of COVID-19 cases reported in the Maldives to a staggering 23,671.

HPA confirmed that 20,839 people have since recovered from the illness and that 2,759 remained as active cases of the pandemic here in the Maldives. HPA added that 93 COVID-19 patients remained hospitalized for further treatment.

Authorities had confirmed 66 COVID-19 deaths since April 2020 and this includes 59 locals and 7 foreigners.

HPA had also said that the confirmed cases include 7 deceased positives whose cause of death is not directly due to COVID-19
