MP for Vaikaradhoo Constituency Hussain Ziyad has submitted a bill to the parliament today that calls to dissolve the Transport Authority.
He had submitted the bill on behalf of the government and the first reading of the bill was heard in the parliament floor today.
The bills said that the authority should be dissolved to further strengthen the sea and land transportation systems in the country.
Earlier this month, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had said that there are overlaps between the transport ministry and the transport authority and the government has now requested the parliament to abolish the law governing the authority.
President Solih conceded that there are certain issues at the Ministry and that it was slow in performing its duties.
He noted that there are overlapping legal elements between the ministry and the transport authority and that the government has asked the parliament to abolish the law governing the authority.
President Solih said that once that law as well as the authority is abolished, certain changes would be brought to the Ministry's structure. He added that this in turn would make the ministry more efficient and goal-driven.
The President also said that once the process of vehicle registration is decentralized and handed over to the councils, the federal government's workload would be eased.
He added that the government would be working towards that goal.
