MP for Maavashu Constituency and former Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed has today submitted an emergency motion to the Parliament calling for equal opportunities to campaign for the upcoming Local Council Elections.
Speaking at the parliamentary sitting today, MP Saeed noted that government Ministers, MP's belonging to the ruling government as well as officials of state-owned companies are taking unfair political advantages afforded to them through the guidelines set by the Health Protection Agency HPA.
He said such officials are traveling to the islands without having to quarantine and that this can be seen as the government exerting its influence on the upcoming elections.
MP Saeed called for equal opportunities to campaign as guaranteed by the Constitution and said that all the political parties competing in the elections must be given this opportunity.
This comes after reports have surfaced that those traveling to the islands to campaign on behalf of the ruling government are not required to quarantine during their travels while others required to complete the mandatory 10-day quarantine.
Campaigning for the local council elections is in full force even amid the pandemic with the much-delayed election now scheduled for 10th April 2021.
