A number of students from Raa Atoll Alifushi School have fallen sick prompting authorities to take random samples from among the students to determine the cause of the sickness.

Speaking to 'The Press', President of Alifushi Island Council Abdullah Raazee said a number of students from the island's school have shown symptoms of cold and have not attended school sessions for the past two days.

He said that a team from R.Atoll regional Hospital in Ungoofaru had arrived on the island today and was now taking random samples from the students currently sick.

The school had confirmed that 123 students from the school have not attended school after being sick.

This comes after the Education Ministry ordered schools in the Greater Male' Area to close down following a significant increase in the number of COVID-19 cases being reported in the area.

The COVID-19 situation in the country remains serious with over 20,000 cases reported across the country up until yesterday.

A total of 63 people have succumbed to the pandemic here in the Maldives including 56 locals and 7 foreigners.

Earlier today a 67-year-old who was brought to the IGMH/ER in an unresponsive state was later declared as the 63rd person to die from COVID-19 and the first person to succumb to the illness this month.
