Health Protection Agency HPA has confirmed that a man under treatment for COVID-19 at Gaafu Alifu Covid Management Facility had passed away earlier this morning.
In a tweet, HPA said that at 09:48 am, a 77-year-old Maldivian man admitted at GA. Covid Management Facility had succumbed to the pandemic.
HPA had confirmed that this is the 56th COVID-19 death in the Maldives.
Earlier, the Manager at Gaafu Alifu Atoll Hospital had confirmed to 'The Press' that the man was from Dhevadhoo and that the man had been bedridden for the past 15 years after suffering a stroke.
Officials had said that the man had been admitted at the COVID facility on the 15th of January and had been on ventilator support as his condition further deteriorated after the patient contracted COVID-19.
A total of 49 locals and 7 foreigners have succumbed to the COVID-19 pandemic here in the Maldives and this is the second time a patient under treatment for COVID-19 had died in a facility outside of the Greater Male' Area.
HPA had confirmed last night that 16,909 people had now contracted the COVID-19 pandemic here in the Maldives and that there are over 2000 active cases of the illness in the country right now.
