Foreign Ministry and its Chinese counterpart have today concluded the 7th Round of Bilateral Consultations at a virtual meeting held this afternoon.
The Ministry said that the bilateral consultations focused on enhancing cooperation between the two countries on mutual areas of interest, and on topics relating to the prevention of the spread of COVID-19 global pandemic, economic recovery, debt service suspension, and resumption of tourism and international travel between Maldives and China.
Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ahmed Khaleel led the Maldives Delegation, and the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China Lou Zhaohui headed the Chinese Delegation.
In his opening remarks, Khaleel reiterated and reaffirmed the Government of Maldives’ unwavering commitment to the One-China Policy.
He further expressed the Maldives’ appreciation to the Chinese Government and Chinese enterprises, for the assistance and generosity they had extended to the Maldives during the ongoing pandemic.
State Minister Khaleel emphasized that the priority for the Maldives was to resume international travel and tourism between Maldives and China, and would hold extensive discussions with all stakeholders involved, on how to move forward with this issue in preparation for the re-opening of borders in China in the near future.
Both sides also held discussions on ongoing projects in the Maldives, and the Chinese side provided assurance that all ongoing projects will continue and that new areas of cooperation between the two sides could be explored. Both sides also agreed to consult closely in preparation for the upcoming 50th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Maldives and China, which will occur in 2022.
Chinese Official Lou Zhaohui, noted that both countries presently enjoy close relations and coordination at the international level and that China further seeks to expand the existing ties and to strengthen the bilateral relationship.
He said that China appreciates the support it has received from the Maldives at the international level and considers the Maldives to be a friend and an important partner.
Due to the ongoing pandemic and travel restrictions, the consultations took place virtually between the two sides. Maldives and China regularly hold bilateral consultations, with the 6th Round of Bilateral Consultations having taken place in 2017.
