President Solih has met US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo who had arrived in the Maldives earlier today in the third leg of his current tour of the Asian continent.

In a tweet, President Solih said that he had very engaging discussions with Secretary Pompeo on furthering Maldives-US cooperation from trade and investment to maritime security to countering terrorism and the climate emergency.

President Solih said that he looked forward to furthering Maldives-US relations in the coming months and years.

Pompeo is the most senior American administration official to visit the Maldives since then-Secretary of State James Baker’s visit to the country in 1992.

Foreign Minister Abdullah Shahid welcomed Secretary of State Pompeo at Velaanaa International Airport.

After meeting President Solih, Secretary Pompeo had joined his Maldivian counterpart Minister Shahid for formal bilateral talks.

Both the officials gave a media press statement which reflected the key discussion points of the bilateral talks.
