MP for Maduvaree Constituency Adam Shareef Umar says the lack of enthusiasm to deliberate on the JSC amendment Bill by MDP clearly shows hesitation to remove political influence out of the justice system.
This comes after parliament super majority MDP MPs opted to sit out the preliminary debate on the Judicial Service Commission Act amendment bill at today’s parliament sitting.
In a tweet, MP Umar said that this is against the presidential pledge from President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and can be viewed as a nod to the speaker of the parliament and former President Mohamed Nasheed and his presence in JSC.
There have been some talks of the speaker trying to exert his power on the judicial commission and thereby strong-arm the judiciary in MDP’s favor.
Meanwhile, MP for Maavashu Constituency and former Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed said on Twitter that MDP’s plans to intermingle the powers of democracy have been exposed after their lack of support for the proposed amendment.
He said that President Solih has failed to achieve his pledge to reform JSC before 2020.
