Health Protection Agency HPA has lifted Gaafu Dhaalu Hoadehdhoo from monitoring after a month amid a local transmission of the COVID-19 pandemic on the island.
HPA had first placed the island under monitoring on the 3rd of September after two unrelated cases of COVID-19 surfaced from the island. These two individuals presented at the island’s flu clinic and had no known connections to the other positive cases reported from the island who had been under home quarantine.
Authorities rushed to conduct contact tracing for the two individuals and identified over 100 contacts for the positive. Officials have also confirmed that more than 40 contacts had tested positive for COVID-19 and that last contact was tested positive on the 24th of last month.
HPA had lifted the island from monitoring earlier this morning and made it the longest to be under HPA monitoring outside of the Greater Male’ Area.
Authorities report that currently, the island does not have any active cases of COVID-19 and with its lift from monitoring status, no island is currently under HPA monitoring. But it also reported that 22 islands across the country have 63 active cases of COVID-19.
The island nation of the Maldives has reported 10465 cases of COVID-19 since March of this year.
While 9310 have since recovered from the illness, 34 individuals had succumbed to COVID-19 in the Maldives.
