President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has today established the 'Regional Airports Company Limited' under Presidential decree.
President's Office said that the company will be fully owned by the Government.
It said that the company is intended to oversee the operations of regional airports developed by the Government and to ensure that they are operated in an efficient and sustainable basis.
With the growth in the tourism sector in recent years, Maldivian aviation has also reached new highs with over 17 airports currently operational in the country.
This includes the country's main commercial airport Velaana International Aiport as well as other airports currently in use in various parts of the country.
Some of these airports are operated by private companies while Island Aviation also manages some of the airports. Also, state-owned companies are involved in managing and operating some of the airports in the Maldives.
