Authorities have confirmed that an individual from Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll Gahdhoo has tested positive for COVID-19.

This is the first time the island has reported a COVID-19 case.

Health Emergency Operations Center HEOC said a 46-year-old Bangladeshi man had tested positive for COVID-19 from the island today. HEOC said the man was tested for COVID-19 having completed the 14-days mandatory home quarantine after having traveled to the Male’ Area.

Health Protection Agency HPA had reported last night that 21 islands in the country are currently hosting 48 active cases of COVID-19 with Gaafu Dhaalu Hoadedhoo and Madaveli the only two islands currently under monitoring.

HPA also said that 27 resorts across the country have active cases of COVID-19 including 18 tourists and 39 staff.

Authorities have said that a total of 9568 individuals have tested positive for COVID-19 since the pandemic reached the Maldivian shores last March.

Officials have also said that out of that 8077 individuals have since recovered from the illness in the country.

The global pandemic has claimed 33 lives here in the Maldives including 27 locals and 6 foreigners.
