President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has ratified the third amendment to the ‘Prosecutor General’s Act’ (Act No. 9/2008).

The President's Office said today that following ratification, the changes to the Act under the new amendment have been published in the Government Gazette.

‎The amendment had been passed by the Parliament at the 33rd sitting of its second session, on 31 August 2020.

It noted that the amendment vests the Prosecutor General with more independence.

It also lists the conditions the Prosecutor-General must adhere to in executing the office’s duties, and in engaging in business or other activities that may compromise its quality of work or ethical standards.

The President's Office said that under the amendment the Prosecutor-General must submit his or her asset declaration form.

It said that the amended Act makes failure to comply with the office's ethical principles or do their due diligence on the part of the Prosecutor General's Office's employees, legally actionable.
