Police have arrested a total of 41 individuals from the vehicle rally organized by the opposition coalition today in Male’.

In a statement, Police said as the country is currently under a state of public health emergency to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, it had stopped a rally held against the guidelines set by the Health Protection Agency to prevent the spread of the pandemic.

Police said 41 individuals were apprehended from the rally today.

Police had warned the participants of the rally to disband and had warned that it would use force to disperse the participants of the rally. Once police had disbanded the vehicle rally, participants of the rally had continued on foot.

Meanwhile, MP for Maduvaree Constituency and former Defense Minister Adam Shareef Umar has assured that the opposition coalition’s legal team would be offering support to all those detained at the rally.

In a tweet, he said no matter who many supporters are arrested today, the opposition legal team would offer its assistance.

Some opposition leaders were seen at the vehicle ride include PNC leader Abdul Raheem Abdullah, former MP for Baarashu Constituency Ibrahim Shujau, and MP for Naifaru constituency Ahmed Shiyam.

Police had earlier issued a warning against mass gatherings and protests and have said that it would take action against those who disobey Health Protection Agency guidelines.
