MP for Maduvari constituency and former Defense Minister Adam Shareef Umar has accused the government of using the country’s armed forces as a tool to defuse tensions with neighboring India.

In a tweet, MP Shareef said that although the government has made MNDF a tool to lessen the tension between the two nations, such a role does not go well with the MNDF uniform.

He likened the Maldivian military as the shield of the country’s sovereignty and as the pride of the nation.

His comments came as Chief of Defense Force Major General Abdullah Shamaal assured yesterday that the Maldives is not hosting armed forces from another country amid reports of armed Indians stationed in the country.

Major General Shamaal had said that there is no foreign military presence in the country. He said especially armed forces from another nation have not been stationed in the Maldives.

But he said the Maldives was always seeking aid in a humanitarian capacity and have requested for technical support.

He addressed the issue after several people voiced concern on social media regarding the presence of armed Indian troops in the Maldives.

They have said that this would endanger the country’s sovereignty and compromise the country’s national security.

The opposition has been holding political activities against the so-called Indian invasion.
