Health Protection Agency has confirmed 98 new cases of COVID-19 in the Maldives as the total number of cases climbs pass 8500 in the country.

In a tweet, HPA said that 87 of the new cases reported from the Greater Male’ Area while 11 were confirmed from the islands.

HPA also said that the new cases include 72 locals and 26 foreigners.

The total number of COVID-19 cases has now reached 8584 in the Maldives.

Meanwhile, HPA said that 114 individuals recovered from the virus today taking the total number of recoveries to 5936.

HPA also said that HPA said that the number of active cases of COVID-19 has reduced from 2629 to 2613 in the last 24 hours.

It also said the number of individuals under isolation has also reduced from 1253 to 1143 in that period.

HPA added that the number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients has also dropped from 168 to 147 today.

The Agency revealed that 35 islands are hosting active cases of COVID-19 at moment and Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll Hoadehdhoo and Madaveli are currently under monitoring with a community outbreak now confirmed in the former.

HPA added that 22 resorts are also hosting active cases of COVID-19 including 19 tourists and 47 staff.

The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed 29 lives in the Maldives including 23 locals and 6 foreigners. Most of the locals who have succumbed to the illness include elderly patients with underlying health issues.

The six foreigners include 5 Bangladeshis and 1 Filipino national.

HPA had said that the confirmed cases of COVID-19 include 6 deceased positives whose cause of death is not directly due to COVID-19.
