Local TV station Channel 13 has issued an apology after a caller on one of its live broadcasts threatened to light President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on fire.

In a statement, Channel 13 said a caller on its ‘Rayithunge adu’ program broadcasted live yesterday had made threatening comments against the President and had called for the President to be lit on fire. Channel 13 said that the caller expressed his own views and opinions on the call and the station had cut the call the moment the caller threatened the President.

The station said, however despite its attempts the threat against the President was broadcasted on live TV and apologized for the mistake from its viewers.

Channel 13 also said the station would never incite violence and hatred and would not give anyone else the opportunity to carry such illegal acts in the future.

This comes after police said it would probe the threat made against President Solih by the caller.

Meanwhile, Maldives Broadcasting Commission BROADCOM said that it would also conduct an investigation into the matter.

It said that it would further probe the incident in which Channel 13 had broadcasted live content that called for bodily harm against President Solih.
