Prominent opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) faces failure in their attempt to initiate a strike at sea outside the bay of Kaafu atoll Maafushi.

Members and supporters of PPM on Tuesday, 25 August traversed to the island which houses the Maafushi Jail in a bid to raise their voice calling for immediate release of imprisoned former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

However, the party's attempt outside Maafushi was met with the intervention of Maldives Police Service who had pushed back the sea vessels out of the island's harbor.

Sources claimed over 100 of the party's supporters inclusive of its top-brass were on board a vessel with the aim of protesting inside the island's lagoon.

Following their stint, members and the party's seniors were summoned to police authority. They were advised to adhere to the guidelines of Health Protection Agency (HPA) while protesting, to which they showed compliance.

While the protesters have been forced outside of the island's bay, they have resorted to carrying the protest beyond Maafushi harbor.

Meanwhile, opposition allied PNC deputy president Ibrahim Shujau claims the protest will be carried across every island of the atoll except Greater Male' Region.
