Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has spoken in support of Foreign Minister Abdullah Shahid amid talks of a motion of no-confidence in the parliament against the minister.

In a tweet, the former president Nasheed said that surely Ministry Shahid had his backing and he lauded the minister’s work for the government.

Minister Shahid had in turn thanked the Speaker for his support.

Media reports in the country say that MP for Kaashidoo constituency Abdullah Jabir is spearheading the work to table a no-confidence motion against Minister Shahid.

According to some reports, MP Jabir has said that the country’s foreign policy has failed and that Minister Shahid should shoulder the responsibility. Jabir had said that the government was fostering selective foreign relations and that Shahid should take the blame for it.

The reports also said that Jabir had insisted that all the foreign missions have failed in their duty and bilateral relations were being developed with only one country. He also said that since Minister Shahid had failed, he should be removed from the post of Foreign Minister.

MP Jabir had said he will propose the motion to the Parliament chamber with the backing of 10 other MPs and that no MP would support Minister Shahid if a vote of no-confidence were to be taken.
