MP for Maduvaree Constitiunecy and former Defense Minister Adam Shareef Umar has accused the Judicial Service Commission JSC of being a ‘puppet’ controlled by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed.
In reply to President Solih’s tweet announcing his nominations for the vacancies on the Supreme Court Bench, MP Shareef said the government does not intend to reform the judiciary.
He also said that a judge who sides with government in his sentencing would not hesitate to side with another government in the future and sentence against President Solih.
His comments came after President Solih forwarded the names of two nominees for the Maldives' Supreme Court, Uz Ali Rasheed Hussain and Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim, for parliamentary approval earlier today.
The Opposition PNC/PPM coalition had voiced its displeasure after the President sent the name of Justice Ali Rasheed Hussain to JSC earlier this month.
The Opposition accused President Solih of rewarding the judge who passed an ‘unfair' sentence against former President Abdullah Yameen with a seat on the Supreme Court Bench.
