Health Protection Agency HPA reports that an elderly woman had died from COVID-19 in the early hours of this morning.

In a tweet, HPA confirmed that at 01:45 am today, a 61-year-old Maldivian Female admitted in Hulhumale Medical Facility HMF, ICU has passed away.

She is the 22nd person to die from COVID-19 in the Maldives.

Earlier, Health Emergency Operation Center HEOC Spokesperson Dr. Fathimath Nazla Rafeeq said that an 83-year-old local man who died yesterday had tested positive for COVID-19 posthumously. Dr. Nazla said the person was rushed to IGMH ER but was declared dead before being treated at the hospital. She said that the person had shown no symptoms of COVID-19 and had no history as a contact of a COVID-19 case.

Dr. Nazla said in light of these the authorities were still working to rule out the death as a COVID-19 death.

The 22 individuals who had passed away from COVID-19 includes 17 locals and 5 foreigners.

Yesterday alone, 128 individuals tested positive for COVID-19 in the Maldives including 83 Maldivians. HPA has confirmed that currently there are 2553 active cases of COVID-19 in the country with 156 individuals hospitalized for further treatment. HPA also reported that 2920 people have recovered from the illness here in the Maldives.
