Health authorities on Wednesday, 12 August, confirmed placing Lhaviyani atoll Naifaru under monitoring.

Meanwhile Health Emergency Operations Center (HEOC) made the confirmation about the new development, after it was reported a Covid-19 case was discovered in the island.

According to local health authorities, a crew member of a vessel originating from the island tested positive for the viral contagion on Wednesday. Additionally, authorities report the patient has been identified as a 34 year old expatriate.

The island's council authority reported that the patient showed similar symptoms of the viral disease after which he was tested. The patient was not under home-quarantine, and had met with several individuals in the island. Furthermore, the patient had visited high-contact areas which includes a local cafes and restaurants.

With the recent developments on Wednesday, active cases are reported from a total of 13 islands which include Haa Alif atoll Kelaa, Filladhoo and Ihavandhoo, Haa Dhaal atoll Naavaidhoo, Raa atoll Hulhudhuffaaru, Baa atoll Kudarikilu and Kamadhoo, Lhaviyani atoll Hinnvaru, Kaafu atoll Maafushi, Vaavu atoll Fulidhoo along with Fuvahmulah City and Addu City along with Lhaviyani atoll Naifaru.

As of Wednesday, Maldives reports a total of 5,223 Covid-19 positive cases inclusive of recoveries and active cases. Authorities further claim a total of 2,849 recoveries while an additional death was reported on Wednesday morning hiking the death toll to 21.
