Political party Maldives Reform Movement, MRM has urged the government to revise the current measures taken against the COVID-19 pandemic and to follow stricter restrictions to further deter the spread of the illness.

In a statement released on the occasion of the 55th Independence Day of the country, MRM noted that the number of new cases of COVID-19 has been increasing each day and that it believed that it is time to revise the current measures taken against the pandemic by putting more stricter measures in place.

MRM said that while the country is celebrating its Independence Day, the people are unable to move from island to island freely and have been faced with several obstacles. It said that the government should do more to control the COVID-19 pandemic while also ensuring more accessible services to its citizens with better and efficient arrangements.

MRM highlighted the country’s independent status has been forged through the hard work and perseverance of many and maintaining the country’s freedom might yet prove more difficult than acquiring it.

It said no matter how big of a challenge this might be; safeguarding the country’s independence will always fall on the shoulders of the ruling government and the country’s people would also play a vital role in the conservation of the country’s freedoms.

Led by former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, MRM had previously called on the government of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to tighten the measures taken in the fight against COVID-19.

MRM’s call came as the number of COVID-19 cases reported each day remained alarmingly high with 127 cases of COVID-19 reported in the last 48 hours alone.
