The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives HRCM has voted out Commission Vice President Mohamed Zahid after the parliamentary committee on Human rights and Gender called for his dismissal.

In the vote taken to dismiss Zahid, 61 members supported the decision to fire him while 2 others opposed the dismissal.

While the parliamentary committee also called for the dismissal of three other members of HRCM, only Zahid was dismissed as the other three had resigned prior to the vote.

These include HRCM President Aminath Inas, Member Aishath Afreen and Member Moosa Ali Kaleyfaanu.

The committee called for the dismissal of the members saying that they had given false information to the committee and cited their incompetence to perform the responsibilities pertaining to their posts.

It highlighted that HRCM had failed to thoroughly investigate several cases submitted to the commission including that of the brutal murder of blogger Yaamin Rasheed and the mysterious disappearance of reporter Ahmed Rilwan.

Meanwhile, today the President’s Office extended the deadline to apply for the vacant member seats on the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM). The new deadline for application is 1230 hours on Wednesday, 5th August 2020.

The President’s Office said it will accept applications on July 23, August 4, and August 5, 2020, from 0930 hours to 1230 hours. Application forms are available for download at presidency.gov.mv.
