Gender Ministry has confirmed a case of COVID-19 from the Children’s Home in Villimale.

Speaking to ‘The Press’ State Minister at the Ministry Zilfeena Hassan said that a 12-year-old under the care of the state at the Children’s Home has tested positive for COVID-19.

She clarified that this child was one of the two children who had returned from India last June after traveling to the country for medicinal purposes in March of this year.

The Ministry also reported that the child was born with a medical condition that required regular treatment from abroad.

It said that the child had been under quarantine for 16 days in the Home itself after traveling back to the Maldives from India and had tested negative for COVID-19 on the 16th of this month.

The Ministry also revealed that the child got sick again and was taken to the state hospital in Villimale where doctors there advised that the child be taken to IGMH in Male’ for further treatment on the 18th of this month.

It said the after the child was shifted to IGMH, a routine COVID-19 sample was taken last night and that the positive result came back just this morning.

The Gender Ministry said it was collaborating with relevant authorities to ensure the safety of the children and staff at the Children’s Home in Villimale and that it would be following all protocols and guidelines to mitigate the situation.

It added that contact tracing for the infected child was now underway as well.
