A sea-bound vessel carrying cargo flipped just outside of the industrial island of Kaafu atoll Thilafushi on Sunday, 19 January.

Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) confirm the cargo boat flipped downside-up after it tilted to a side following embarking. The authority further clarifies the three crew on board at the time of the incident were rescued on to another vessel.

Earlier, it was reported a Coastguard vessel of the national defense force was en-route to the site of incident.

The island nation is currently experiencing stormy weather - rough seas across the country with heavy rain for most parts. On early Sunday morning, MNDF provided assistance to a docked cargo boat at Male' Commercial Harbor as it experienced waterlogging.

Meanwhile Maldives Meteorological Center (MET Office) issued a yellow alert for the islands between Haa Alif and Laamu atolls, notifying of worsening weather conditions between 12:00hrs until 16:00hrs.

The weather forecast authority of Maldives further estimates wind speed picking up between 25 to 30 miles per hour in gust strength for alert issued areas.

Maldives capital Male' City and the Greater Male' Region is currently experiencing rainy weather as well with strong gusts.
