Maldives Parliament on Wednesday, 15 July has approved the bill on Import/Export Act to increase import duty on energy drinks or energy drink products.
The bill to amend Maldives Import/Export Act was proposed by Gan constituency lawmaker Mohamed Wisam, to which North-Kulhudhuffushi constituency member Yasir Abdul Latheef proposed increment of import duty on energy drinks.
The lawmaker proposed to increase import duty on energy drink at a rate of MVR60.50, which was voted by 58 members present in parliament chambers.
Moreover, the parliament made approval of exempting 50 percent on import duties to shipped goods at atoll ports with the exception of cigarettes and alcoholic beverages or products.
Prior to the amendment, the import duty on energy drinks stayed at a rate of MVR33.64, and will remain the same for energy drinks or energy drink products directly shipped to atolls outside of Male'.
