State Electric Company Limited Stelco says it will include a 40 percent discount for the electricity bill for last month after customers complained of the unusually high bills for June.

Speaking at a press conference held earlier today, Stelco Managing Director Hassan Mughnee said that the company would cut 40 percent of the bill amount for the month of June. He also said that the utility company would resend the revised bill to its customers this month.

He also said that customers can pay their electricity bills for the months of March, April, May, and June in installments and even business customers can apply for this mode of payment as well.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Stelco had given a 40 percent discount on electricity bills for the months of April and May.

The utility company said it had given a discount of MVR 50 million to 92, 588 households.

Most customers have voiced dissatisfaction after they received their electricity bills for the month of June after the bill amount doubled and on rare occasions tripled from their previous bill amounts.

Stelco had said the increase in usage, the hot climate, and the lack of discount accounted for the doubled bill amounts.
