Maldives Red Crescent MRC says its migrant relief fund has received donations of MVR 1.3 million as efforts to aid the most affected by the Covid-19 crisis gains momentum.

In a statement, MRC said that it had collected donations starting from the 1st of May and continued on to the 1st of June. It also said when the fund was closed on the 1st of June and the combined bank accounts opened at Bank of Maldives and Maldives Islamic Banks had received MVR 1.3 million as relief fund.

MRC said the purpose of starting such a fund was to expand the relief aid provided to migrant workers amid the Covid-19 crisis and to provide such assistance in a sustainable manner. MRC had said that it would use this fund to bolster its activities that aim to assist migrant workers who have fallen on hard times as the whole economy staggers due to the global pandemic.

MRC in the capital Male’ has been offering food packages and hygienic kits to migrant workers affected by the crisis.

Speaking on the matter, MRC Secretary-General Fathimath Himya said that 85 percent of this fund would be used to arrange meals to the migrant workers.

The Migrant support Center in Male’ has been providing meals to about 3600 migrants since the crisis began.

MRC also said that it had been providing hygienic kits to about 50 migrant workers in the capital Male’, the organization has planned to spend 10 percent of the funds on purchasing hygienic kits. It also said that it would spend 5 percent of the funds on administrative and logistical support.
