Health Protection Agency HPA says almost 200 frontline workers have tested positive for Covid-19 in the Maldives as authorities prepare for the surge of cases in the coming weeks.

HPA’s epidemiologist Dr. Afzal revealed the information during the latest press briefing held to update the local media on the developments of the Covid-19 crisis in the Maldives.

Dr. Afzal’s presentation revealed that 199 frontline workers have tested positive for the virus here in the Maldives.

Last Wednesday, Dr. Afzal’s presentation showed that between 16th April to 12th May, 137 frontline workers had contracted the virus in the Maldives.

This means, from last Wednesday to yesterday, an additional 62 frontline workers have tested positive for Covid-19.

The alarming number of frontline workers stricken with the virus has now raised the question about the government’s contingency plan for the situation as the country enters into the two week surge period.

Officials have said that the current spread of the virus could hit the peak in the coming days possibly at the end of the month.
