The government repatriates 353 Bangladeshi national back to their home country amid the rapid spread of Covid-19 in the migrant community in the Maldives.

The foreigners were repatriated via a Biman Airlines flight chartered by the government of Maldives.

The Foreign Ministry said the Bangladeshis who were repatriated yesterday were undocumented migrant workers living in the Maldives.

It also said 70 other undocumented Bangladeshis returned home via the Bangladeshi Military plan that delivered food and medical supplies to the Maldives yesterday.

The Maldivian foreign ministry and Economic Ministry are working with the Bangladeshi High Commission here in the country to send some 1500 undocumented migrants back to Bangladesh.

This comes amid the rapid spread of Covid-19 with the Bangladeshi migrant community most affected by the pandemic here in the Maldives. The latest data by the Health Protection Agency show that 557 Bangladeshi nationals have tested positive for Covid-19 in the Maldives.

A total of 1078 people have tested positive for the virus in the Maldives.
