Maldives Police Services says all grocery permits issued by Police can only be used once a week starting from Saturday as authorities gear up for a surge of Covid-19 cases in the Maldives.

That means the permit holder from each household would be allowed to go outside once every week for grocery shopping.

In a tweet, Police said that registered permit holders would receive a text message detailing the new time allocated for the household. It said that the permit holders do not have to re-register at the police portal.

Police said that this precautionary measure was taken to control a possible surge of Covid-19 in the Maldives, especially Male’ Area where the virus is rampant.

Male’ Area including Male’, Villimale and Hulhumale have been under lockdown since the 15th of last month with police issuing delivery permits for businesses and grocery permits for 1 person from each household.

While more than 3000 individuals have been fined for disregarding lockdown rules more than 200 people have been arrested for violating lockdown regulations.

Earlier this week, Health Protection Agency HPA had extended the lockdown of Male’ Area for another two weeks with health officials warning of a surge of Covid-19 cases in the country.
