Heavy rain has caused major flooding in Addu City with many households across the City affected by the rain.

Maldives National Defense Force MNDF said heavy rain has caused flooding on the streets of Addu City and some household has reported water damage by the flooding.

MNDF said its southern area command was working to minimize the damage caused by the flooding by placing sandbags on thresholds of the houses affected by the downpour.

MNDF also said it was working to pump out the excess water to control the flood.

Reports have said that the flooding has damaged some storage facilities and MNDF is working with facility managers to assess the damage. These facilities include stable food storage as well.

The heavy rain that has been pouring down since 12:00hrs last night has affected almost all of the wards of Addu City. Media reports say the most affected areas include Feydhoo, Maradhoo Feydhoo, and Hithadhoo.

MET office has issued a yellow alert from Laamu Atoll to Addu City with strong winds, heavy showers, thunder, and lightning also expected in the area.

During the last monsoon season, households from the City suffered major damages from heavy rains and flooding.
