Out of the 38 random samples acquired from Maafushi Jail, 22 have tested negative for the Covid-19 virus.
Minister of Home Affairs Ibrahim Abdullah had confirmed of the recent development at a press briefing on Monday at the National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC).
The minister attested 15 samples from prisoners and 23 samples from prison guards were collected on a randomized basis for testing.
He continued to note that out of the samples collected, results of 22 samples have been confirmed; all of which tested negative.
Minister of Home Affairs asserted his hopefulness over complete absence of the viral pandemic in the penitentiary.
Health Protection Agency (HPA) is currently collecting samples on a randomized basis, completely unrelated to clusters to identify the extent of community spread. The testing spans across entire Maldives.
Meanwhile, it was recently confirmed a random sample from Male' city had tested positive for the virus.
Maldives reports a total of 862 positive cases of which 30 have made recoveries. So far the island nation have reported only 3 deaths in relation to the virus, out of which two were elderly local citizens and one was a middle-aged Bangladesh national with other critical health conditions.
