NEOC spokesperson Mohamed Mabrook Azeez says a total of MVR 560 million has been spent to fight against global pandemic Covid-19.

Briefing the local media on the latest updates of Government’s effort to combat the fast spreading virus, Mabrook said out of this MVR 84 million was spent from the Disaster Trust fund to guarantee the availability of staple foods for the nation for the next 10 months.

Further detailing the expenditure, Mabrook said the MVR 560 million include MVR 11 million from tourism trust fund as well as MVR 386 million spent from National Disaster Management Agency NDMA and Health Ministry. He said MVR 36 million have been spent on the medical facility currently under construction in Hulhumale’.

Mabrook said MVR 5.9 was spent on the initial renovation of the Farukolhufushi Isolation facility and a further MVR 1.4 million was spent on other repairs of the same facility. Mabrook said MVR 27 million was spent to revamp other facilities including putting in ICU beds for the facilities.

NEOC spokesperson clarified that the MVR 560 million spent against Covid-19 include the MVR 6.6 million spent by Foreign Ministry. He said the ministry used the funds to assist Maldivians stranded abroad and also help some repatriate back to Maldives amid the Covid-19 crisis.

Mabrook said if the current situation persists for the next three months, the government might have to spend over MVR 1.4 billion in its fight against the global pandemic.
