Maldives Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla has praised Maafushi penitentiary officers for successfully quelling commotion at the premises on Saturday.
Minister Imran had attended the premises on Saturday after reports of unrest broke out from the prison. The minister had praised the initiative of prison officers in controlling the unrest.
Following an inspection of Maafushi penitentiary, Home Minister further attested no one had received any noticeable injuries during Saturday's confrontation between prisoners and officers.
Meanwhile Maldives Correctional Service confirmed the unrest broke out when prisoners at the Unit-9 Cell block attempted to step out from their zone.
The cell block was opened by prison officers to provide food for inmates.
Although both prisoners and officers had not sustained grievous injuries, it was confimred one inmate and two prison officers received minor injuries during the confrontation.
