Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) has confirmed the national safety and public protection authority has elevated the alert level.

The authority has elevated their security status or alert level over fears of radicalism intruding into Maldives once again amid the COVID-19 pandemic; which has ignited widespread racism and hate crime across the world.

Countries such as USA and Australia in recent weeks have reported several cases of racial hatred and violence by locals directed towards people of Asian descent.

MNDF made the confirmation in a letter of response to the special parliament committee on safety and security services which had inquired about the status of the country's internal affairs with regards to violent ideologies and radicalism spreading once again.

The security services authority claims it was on alert for such violations and breaches on the social structure. Moreover, MNDF notes crime is expected to hit an upward trend including thievery, assault as well as narcotics cases.

In addition, MNDF notes cases related to domestic abuse or assault may also be on the rise.
