Addu City Mayor Abdulla Sodiq on Thursday claimed the decision to close cafes, restaurants and shop outlets operating in the city post discussion with relevant authorities.

The mayor's decision comes in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, due to which most public venues have been shut or closed down temporarily.

Sodiq claims a formal discussion with Direction General of Health Service precursored before the decision to close down businesses after 18:00hrs, was approved.

Addu City's mayor further added the decision was approved by the Addu COVID-19 Taskforce through unanimous approval.

His statements have come as a direct rebuttal to state spokesperson Mabrouk Abdul Azeez's earlier statement.

Mr Azeez claimed the decision was arrived without prior discussion or approval from Health Protection Agency (HPA).

The Addu City COVID-19 Taskforce released a circular on Wednesday evening ordering businesses; with exemption of pharmacies and clinics, to close down shop at 18:00hrs.

The circular also added the current approved business hours for such business will be from 06:00hrs until 18:00hrs until further notice.
