The Indian government has donated three months worth of supply of essential medicines on request from the Maldivian government.

India made the donation, in an effort to enhance the readiness of the island nation to combat against the rapid spread of the COVID-19 virus. During the handover ceremony on Saturday afternoon, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Abdulla Shahid thanked the Indian government for its "timely assistance in providing medicines."

The supplied essential items include 53 types of medicines.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, during the handover session had emphasized on the "importance of international cooperation" and stressed on "maintaining collaborative efforts in controlling and preventing the spread" of the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the ceremony, the High Commissioenr of India in the Maldives had highlighted, it was a special gesture for the people of the island nation as a special exemption has been made at a time when the medicines in question have been restricted from exporting.
